DAY 5 WRAP: Blackman scores a Hattrick!
Home star Nikoli Blackman won his third gold medal of the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, with victory in the men’s 50m freestyle on a thrilling final night of swimming in Trinidad.
Swimming
Blackman was cheered home by the another partisan crowd at the National Aquatics Centre, with his teammate Zarek Wilson also picking up bronze. Marvin Johnson Jnr. of Bermuda took home the silver.
Elsewhere, Matthew Ward of Scotland rounded-off a sensational Games personally with a fourth individual gold, while Australia’s Mikayla Bird will head home with three gold medals.
Skye Carter will also head home with three golds, after following backing-up her Games record 50m freestyle win with victory as part of England’s by forming part of the England team which won the 4x100 mixed relay team. event to finish the evening.

Athletics and Para Athletics
Records tumbled on both track and field at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, as England’s Ayesha Jones won the women’s javelin with a Games record throw of 52.49m.
In the women’s 400m hurdles, her teammate Stephanie Okoro blitzed round in 58.19s to create her own Commonwealth Youth Games record, while Shaquane Gehvon Gordon ended the day with another Games record to take the men’s 110m hurdles.
England’s brilliant evening continued as Ethan Carey Glyde won the high jump title, and Maddie Down won her second gold of the games, taking the women’s long jump - T38 crown.

Cycling - Track
Australia’s Lauren Bates continued her superb form, picking up a third gold medal in the women’s 7.5km scratch race.
In the women’s sprint, Sarah Johnson of Scotland won the gold medal, while Nur Alyssa Mohd Fahd of Malaysia took silver and Liliya Tatarinoff of Australia the bronze.
Australia’s Tayte Ryan was the men’s sprint winner, and there was delight for the home fans as Trinidad and Tobago’s Syndel Samaroo and Danell James picked-up silver and bronze.

Beach Volleyball
In the men’s competition, Canada will face England in the final tomorrow, after they beat Cyprus and New Zealand respectively.
The women’s final will be contested between Canada, who overcame Kenya, and Australia, who beat neighbours New Zealand. The bronze and gold medal matches will all take place on the final day of competition.

FAST5 Netball
Australia and South Africa both won their final group matches to top the groups with a perfect record in the morning, before sealing their places in the final later in the day.
The Australians beat England 44-25, while South Africa saw off Scotland 51-20 to set up a mouth-watering final showdown at Shaw Park Cultural Complex on Thursday afternoon.
